COP26 glasgow commences from October 31st to November 12th. The world is looking forward to the convention as crucial decisions need to be taken to bring down emissions and keep temperature well under 2 degree Centrigrade.
What is COP?
The COP is a yearly formal gathering of the members of 197 countries for the United Nations Framework of Climate Change Conference parties to monitor and take decisions about combating global warming. The conference that began in 1995 in Berlin, is a supreme decision-making body that reviews the implementation of the Convention. and any other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention, including institutional and administrative arrangements.
The 2015 COP in Paris, was a landmark convention for the historic Paris agreement that proposed the pact to keep the global temperature well below 2 degree Centigrade. At the convention the world united to come up with strategies to bring down carbon emissions in their countries and businesses.
Did India host COP?
India hosted COP8, Delhi in 2002, where Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee addressed the gathering.
What did India say at COP?
At the conference in 2002, Pime Minister Vajpayee said:
“First, our per capita Green House Gas emissions are only a fraction of the world average, and an order of magnitude below that of many developed countries. This situation will not change for several decades to come. We do not believe that the ethos of democracy can support any norm other than equal per capita rights to global environmental resources.
Second, our per capita incomes are again a small fraction of those in industrialized countries. Developing countries do not have adequate resources to meet their basic human needs. Climate change litigation will bring additional strain to the already fragile economies of the developing countries. And will affect our efforts to achieve higher GDP growth rates to eradicate poverty speedily.
Third, the GHG intensity of our economies at purchasing power parity is low and, in any case, not higher than that of industrialized countries. Thus, the assertion that developing countries generate GHG emissions, which are unnecessary for their economies, is not based on facts.”
Who hosts COP26?
COP26, will be held in Glasgow from Oct31st to Nov12. The convention was postponed by one year due to the pandemic.
What are the agenda of COP26?
Get finance flowing for finance action. Enhance collaboration on energy transitions, clean road transport and nature. Step-changes in emission reduction and strengthen adaption to climate change.
