Delhi’s Monsoon : From Inundation to Forecasted Showers
Delhi’s Monsoon Pulse Check

Today’s Outlook – Easing Up, But Keep the Umbrella Handy!
As of September 10, 2025, Delhi is experiencing a much-needed reprieve from the intense weather of the past week. The most significant development for daily life is the reopening of the Old Railway Bridge over the Yamuna. This crucial arterial bridge, which had been closed since September 2 due to the Yamuna’s dangerously high water levels, has now resumed vehicular traffic, significantly improving connectivity across northeast and central Delhi.
Prediction
While the immediate crisis has subsided, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that showers are still likely in Delhi through September 15. So, while the worst appears to be over, occasional light rainfall can still be expected, making an umbrella a sensible accessory for the coming days. Interestingly, a shift in monsoon behavior is being observed: while the northeast and hilly regions continue to receive heavy rainfall, the plains, including Delhi, are starting to feel increasing heat and humidity.

The Aftermath – Delhi Recovers from Yamuna’s Swell (Sept 2-9)
The period between September 2nd and 9th was a challenging one for Delhi. The city grappled with the severe consequences of heavy monsoon rains and the Yamuna River breaching its danger level.
The was severe flooding in Delhi from September 2nd to 9th. Continuous rains and increased water from the Hathnikund barrage caused the Yamuna River to peak at 207.48 meters on September 4th. Thereby displacing over 10,000 residents. Key areas like Ring Road and ITO were submerged, disrupting transport. Water levels slowly receded over the following days, but the situation remained precarious. Sanitation drives were launched, and a spike in malaria cases was reported. Relief camps stayed open and health teams were deployed as authorities considered long-term flood management strategies.

The Onset of the inundation
September 1, 2025, served as the initial flashpoint. So, the beginning of the month ushered in Delhi’s challenging week with intense rainfall and rapidly rising water levels.
