How to Reduce Waste in the Household

Once you begin researching ways to minimize your household waste, you will realize that opportunities to recycle, reuse, and reduce are plentiful. We will give you some tips on how to begin

Rapid climate change has made it necessary for everyone to do their part, no matter how small, in helping the environment. Introducing a change into your daily life to lead an eco-friendlier lifestyle is all it takes. What is more, it is not even difficult to implement such changes. And the best place to start making a difference in the world is your own home. There are many ways to create a greener home.

For instance, minimize your water and energy consumption. Or switch to more environmentally-friendly alternatives to various products. Also, you can switch to a plant-based diet or at least introduce more plant-based meals in your diet. You can do a lot. But today, we will focus on the ways to reduce waste in the household.

Why is it critical to reduce waste in the household?

You are probably familiar with the images of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is an enormous pile of plastic waste floating in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. Even without this environmental disaster, our planet is brimming with rubbish. And believe it or not, our homes are the biggest culprits. The waste we produce is the most considerable contributor to this alarming situation. Moreover, it should go without saying that this situation has a massive impact on the environment and contributes to climate change

Therefore, it is imperative for people to grow more environmentally conscious and alter their habits to reduce their household waste. Although many governments have tried to introduce various programs to minimize waste, and they certainly do help, true change cannot happen without the adjustments in the collective awareness.

Tips to reduce waste in the household

Once you begin researching ways to minimize your household waste, you will realize that opportunities to recycle, reuse, and reduce are plentiful. We will give you some tips on how to begin.

Record and analyze your daily habits

Before taking any concrete measures, you have to analyze your behavior and see whether you have any routines that cause garage accumulation. Perhaps you are not aware of this. But, if you put everything you do on paper and go through the waste you have created, you will probably come to some interesting realizations.

Once you have a sheet of paper with all your daily habits, go through it and see if there is any room for improvement. For instance, many people disregard food waste. But it still is a waste, and it ends where all our household rubbish ends – in the landfills. So, you could consider composting. It is a fantastic way to reduce waste in the household.

Minimize packaged products shopping

There are a few ways to do this:

Choose reusable items

Dispose of disposables. Don’t waste your money and polluter the environment with disposable plates, cups, plastic bags, zip bags, or batteries. Instead, go for reusable, washable dishes and containers. Also, invest in rechargeable batteries. They are more expensive initially, but you will save in the long run, and you won’t constantly throw away used batteries.

  • Buy bigger packages. When buying food, bigger containers will reduce the rubbish. Also, prioritize biodegradable packaging and those made of recyclable materials.
  • Find products with less packaging. Consider an average packet of cookies. They are placed in a plastic container, wrapped in a plastic bag, then packed in a cardboard box. There are several layers of packaging. So, try to find a brand that doesn’t use excessive packing materials for its products.
  • Buy food from the bulk bins. Food such as flour, sugar, rice, oats, nuts, and many more items can often be purchased from the bulk bins, particularly common in healthy food stores. You scoop the product and pour it into a bag. It creates less waste, and those bags are usually made of paper, a much greener material than plastic. What is more, you can bring your own reusable containers and create zero waste.
  • Don’t buy pre-packaged fruit and vegetables. The more we avoid purchasing pre-packaged produce, the lower the demand for these will be. As a result, there will be less non-recyclable rubbish.

Also, avoid buying plastic grocery bags but remember to bring your cloth bag with you when you go shopping. Still, when you must get a plastic bag, make sure to reuse it at least.

Furthermore, there is no life event that you cannot make more eco-friendly. When traveling, renovating, or moving to a new home, you create so much waste without even realizing it. The simplest example is the moving boxes. You don’t give them a second thought because you need to pack your belongings in something. However, cardboard is not a good solution. You may think that it is a green packing material because it is recyclable and it is natural. Still, there are many reasons why cardboard boxes are not eco-friendly. Reusable plastic bins are a much better solution.

Buy quality items

You are probably familiar with the slogan “I’m not rich enough to buy cheap things.” This is one of the greatest truths in the world. If you invest a bit more in better quality items, they will last longer. Not only will you reduce household waste, but it will save you money in the long run, as you won’t have to replace these items frequently. This goes for anything you buy, your dishes, clothes, shoes, toys, etc.

Buy less in general

The painful truth is that we live in a consumerist society. Constant advertising and piles of things surrounding us make us want to buy more and more. However, if you take a step back and take a moment to think the next time you get the urge to buy something you feel you absolutely must have, you will realize that you actually don’t need it, and you don’t have to have it.

So, before any rash purchase, take the alternative road:

  • Think about whether you already have something that can do the same thing.
  • See if there is anything you can repurpose.
  • Don’t go shopping that often and reduce your exposure to temptations.

Whenever possible, repair a broken item before buying a new one

Another consequence of consumers is our habit of throwing away anything we break and replacing it with a new item. But, if you want to reduce the waste, try to repair those items. If a zipper on your jacket jams, get it replaced. Similarly, if the sole on your shoes is damaged, a cobbler can quickly fix it. Most of your appliances can be fixed a couple of times before you really have to replace them. And all of this will save you a lot of money, as repairs come with a much lower price tag.

A few more additional tips

There are so many more ways to reduce waste in the household and resort to a more eco-conscious lifestyle that they cannot fit in a single article. These have been a few tips to get you started. But you can also donate items you no longer need, plan your meals so you don’t buy food you won’t eat, start composting, stop buying bottled water and single-use straws, switch to cloth napkins, and kitchen towels, and make your own kitchen products.
